Digimon Data Squad, known as Digimon Savers in Japan, is the fifth anime series in the Digimon franchise. It aired from April 2006 to March 2007 in Japan, with a total of 48 episodes. This season introduced a more mature tone, an older main character, and a focus on government-led Digimon control.
Synopsis
Set in the real world, the story follows Masaru Daimon, a hot-headed 14-year-old street fighter who ends up joining DATS (the Digital Accident Tactics Squad), an organization that manages Digimon activity in the human world. After meeting Agumon, Masaru forms a bond that leads him to battle against rampaging Digimon and uncover a deeper threat that connects both worlds.
As the team investigates mysterious Digital Gates and growing instability between the Digital and Human Worlds, they face off against powerful rogue Digimon, a rogue scientist, and even ancient godlike beings.

Key Themes and Tone
Digimon Data Squad focuses on family, duty, identity, and conflict between worlds. It’s known for its more serious tone, character-driven arcs, and exploration of what happens when humans try to control or exploit Digimon.
Unlike previous seasons, the Tamers in Data Squad punch their Digimon partners to activate Digivolution, symbolizing their bond and resolve. This unique mechanic added a physical and emotional intensity to the series.

Legacy
Digimon Data Squad is often praised for its more mature storytelling, strong world-building, and fresh take on the Tamer-Digimon relationship. It may not be as nostalgic as the early seasons, but it helped redefine what a Digimon series could be for older fans and newcomers alike.
It also marks the last mainline series before the franchise entered a new era with reboots, spiritual successors, and experimental formats like Digimon Xros Wars and Digimon Universe: App Monsters.
